John 5:30–40 - 30 “I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 31 “If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true. 32 “There is another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true. 33 “You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. 34 “But the testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 “He was the lamp that was burning and was shining and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36 “But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me. 37 “And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form. 38 “You do not have His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent. 39 “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; 40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.
What does today’s passage say?
In today's passage, Jesus explains that He does not act independently but follows God's direction completely in making judgments (v. 30). He then describes several sources that confirm His identity. He points to John the Baptist's statements about Him, the supernatural works He performs, and God the Father's direct testimony (vv. 31-37). Jesus tells the religious leaders that although they study the Scriptures carefully, believing this will give them eternal life (v. 39a), they miss the main point - these same Scriptures point to Him as the source of true life. Despite all the evidence, they still refuse to come to Him to receive that life (vv. 39b-40).
How can I apply John 5:30-40 to my life?
God provides clear evidence to show us who Jesus is and why we should believe in Him. Jesus faced opposition from religious leaders who studied Scripture but missed its main message about Him. Their problem went deeper than simple confusion - they chose to reject the truth about Jesus even though they had strong proof of His identity. The same challenge exists today when people look at the evidence for Jesus but turn away from putting their faith in Him. This passage teaches us about different ways God proves Jesus is His Son. It also shows us how easily people can study the Bible without ever truly believing what it says about Jesus. The religious leaders had extensive Bible knowledge, yet they refused to let that knowledge lead them to faith in Christ. Their example warns us about the danger of substituting head knowledge for heart-changing faith. God wants us to examine the evidence He gives about Jesus and respond with genuine faith. The goal of studying Scripture goes beyond gaining information - it points us toward a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ. Here are some basic principles from this passage that we should apply to our lives:
1. Follow Jesus' Example of Complete Submission to the Father (v. 30): Jesus showed His total dedication to following the Father's will by stating He could do nothing on His own. Most of us struggle daily with surrendering control - we hold onto our plans with tight fists and hesitate to let God direct our paths. Yet true submission, like Jesus demonstrated, transforms our whole approach to life. Some days it feels impossible to give up our carefully crafted plans. Other days, especially when life gets tough, we might find it easier to hand things over to God. This back-and-forth battle with submission plays out in big decisions and small daily choices. God calls us to yield everything - our jobs, relationships, finances, and future dreams. Total submission means trading our limited perspective for God's perfect wisdom, even when His direction seems unclear. It takes courage to admit we are not really in control. Following Jesus' example of submission often leads us down unexpected paths that stretch our faith. But here is the amazing reality: when we finally release our grip on control, we discover God's ways bring deep peace and lasting purpose. He guides us toward choices we never would have made on our own - choices that end up blessing others and bringing Him glory. The battle for control never completely goes away, but each time we choose submission over self-rule, we grow stronger in our walk with God (Philippians 2:5-8, Matthew 26:39, James 4:7).
Food for Thought: In what areas of your life do you find it hardest to submit to God's will? What specific steps can you take today to better align your choices with God's direction?
2. Trust the Three-fold Witness to Jesus' Authority Given by John, by His Works, and by God Himself (vv. 31-37): Jesus presented three powerful witnesses that proved His divine authority. In our modern world, people search for proof about Jesus in many different places - through science, philosophy, historical documents, or personal experiences. The truth about Jesus stands firm through these three witnesses. When we face doubts or questions about our faith, we need to look at the evidence God has already given us. The testimony of John the Baptist showed others the way to Jesus, and his bold proclamation still points people to truth today. The miraculous works Jesus performed displayed His power over nature, sickness, and even death. These demonstrations of divine power leave no room for explaining them away as mere coincidence or trickery. Most importantly, God the Father confirmed Jesus as His Son. The same proofs that validated Jesus centuries ago remain just as powerful now. Many people today want new evidence or modern proof, but God has already provided all we need to believe. Our role is to accept these witnesses and build our faith on their firm foundation. When we study these proofs carefully, our confidence grows stronger. We can share these same witnesses with others who have questions about Jesus. The evidence calls for a response - either accepting Jesus as God's Son or rejecting the clear testimony He provided. Building our faith on these witnesses protects us from being swept away by false teachings or passing doubts (Matthew 3:16-17, John 10:37-38, Acts 2:22).
Food for Thought: How has God strengthened your faith through the evidence He has provided about Jesus? What would you tell someone who says they need more proof to believe in Jesus?
3. Do Not Make Knowledge a Substitute for Faith (v. 39a): The religious leaders studied Scripture intensely but missed its central message about Jesus. Many people today fill their minds with Bible facts and theological knowledge while keeping Jesus at arm's length. Getting caught up in academic study of God's Word without letting it change our hearts creates a false sense of spiritual growth. Knowledge alone becomes an idol that blocks real connection with Jesus. Some believe that more information will solve their spiritual struggles, so they pack their schedules with Bible studies and seminars. Others pride themselves on winning theological debates or knowing obscure Bible facts. These patterns reveal how easily we can use head knowledge to avoid the personal transformation God wants to work in us. The danger lies not in studying Scripture - which God commands us to do - but in allowing that study to become a substitute for genuine faith. Biblical knowledge should lead us toward deeper trust in Jesus, not become an end in itself. When we notice ourselves valuing theological facts over walking closely with Jesus, it signals time for change. True spiritual growth happens when we apply what we learn, allowing God's truth to shape our attitudes and actions. Knowledge can actually block faith when we use it to feel superior to others or to avoid dealing with areas where God wants us to grow. The solution involves approaching Scripture with humility, asking God to move His truth from our heads to our hearts. This shift from mere knowledge to living faith opens the door for God to work powerfully in our lives (1 Corinthians 8:1-3, James 1:22-25, 2 Timothy 3:7).
Food for Thought: What role does Bible knowledge play in your relationship with Jesus - does it draw you closer to Him or become a barrier? In what ways might you be substituting religious activities for authentic faith?
4. Let God's Word Lead You to Life in Jesus (vv. 39b-40): The religious leaders refused to come to Jesus for life even though Scripture pointed directly to Him. People often search the Bible for solutions to their problems while ignoring its main purpose - leading them into a real relationship with Jesus Christ. The Bible exists to guide us toward Jesus and the eternal life He offers. Each page reveals something about His character, His mission, or His invitation to follow Him. Many people read Scripture looking for tips on better living, success principles, or interesting stories, but miss the life-changing personal connection Jesus wants to establish. God gave us His Word as a roadmap to a relationship with His Son. Reading the Bible without responding to Jesus creates spiritual blindness and keeps us trapped in darkness. The words on those pages hold no magical power in themselves - their transforming effect comes through leading us to put our trust in Jesus. When we open Scripture, we need to look beyond the printed words to see the living Word, Jesus Christ. He stands ready to give eternal life to everyone who comes to Him through faith. The Bible points to Jesus on every page, through prophecies, pictures, and promises. Daily Bible reading becomes more than gathering information when we focus on meeting Jesus there. Opening God's Word with an eagerness to know Jesus better changes how we read and apply Scripture. The same verses that seemed dry or difficult come alive when we see how they reveal Jesus. God's Spirit uses Scripture to draw people toward faith in Christ, but each person must choose to respond. Some hear the message and still turn away, while others discover the joy of finding real life in Jesus (Luke 24:27, Hebrews 4:12, 2 Timothy 3:15).
Food for Thought: How has your Bible reading changed since you first believed in Jesus? What keeps you from spending more time getting to know Jesus through God's Word?
God has given us rock-solid proof about Jesus. Through these verses, we see a startling contrast. The religious leaders had everything they needed - excellent Bible training, eyewitness testimony, and miraculous signs right in front of them. Still, they refused to believe. Their hearts stayed cold and closed to Jesus. Today, we have those same powerful witnesses. John the Baptist boldly declared Jesus as God's Son. The miracles Jesus performed showed His divine power. God Himself spoke from heaven to confirm Jesus' identity. Yet knowing these facts means nothing without taking the next step of faith. Some people fill their minds with Bible facts but keep their hearts far from Jesus. Others study Scripture like a textbook while missing its living message. Real life-change happens when we follow Jesus' example of complete surrender to God. The Bible's purpose stays crystal clear - pointing us straight to Jesus Christ. What we do with that truth makes all the difference. People who trust in Jesus find the eternal life He offers. Those who turn away, like those ancient religious leaders, miss everything that matters most.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
I pray that You would open my eyes to see Jesus more clearly through Your Word. Help me follow His example of complete submission to Your will, even when it means giving up control of my plans and dreams. I pray that You would strengthen my faith through the powerful witnesses You have provided about Jesus - through John the Baptist's testimony, through His miraculous works, and through Your own confirmation of Him as Your Son.
Lord, I ask that You would guard my heart against the trap of substituting Bible knowledge for genuine faith. Show me any ways I might be using religious activities or theological understanding to avoid a deeper relationship with Jesus. I pray that You would transform my Bible reading from a mere academic exercise into life-changing encounters with Your Son.
I pray that You would give me the wisdom and discernment to see Jesus on every page of Scripture, and grant me courage to respond to Him with authentic faith. I pray that You would help me share these truths with others who need to know Jesus as their Savior. Make me bold in pointing people to the clear evidence You have given about Your Son.
I pray these things in the most precious name of Jesus, Amen.
John 5:39 - “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me;”
With His Blessings,
Pastor Corby
